This gorgeous box has been painted by M. Mochalova whose bright, festive works are becoming more and more popular among lacquer miniature collectors. Her wonderful creations are always pleasant to contemplate.
The box shows a girl who watches the puppet show. The composition is multi-layered. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture. The depth of the composition is also strengthened by mother-of-pear that is set into the stage scenery in the background. Mother-of-pearl has bright orange and green undertones that suit the rich palette nicely. Gold metal leaf shines through the costumes of some characters. Brilliant gold and silver paints are used to draw the patterns that decorate the area around the stage.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
