Description: This box is from Yuriy Mikhalyov's series of works dedicated to old Russian towns. It shows a picturesque view of the town of Suzdal that is considered one of the major religious centers of Russian Orthodoxy.
Suzdal, one of the oldest towns in north-east Russia, was the capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality in the 11th century. It is located approximately 200 km from Moscow on the banks of the Kamenka River. Today, the town operates as an important tourist center, featuring many fine examples of old Russian architecture — most of them churches and monasteries.
Blue tones dominate here. The clouds are painted in gold paint. Silver paint is used to highlight the cupolas of the cathedral, and the lake painted in the foreground.
The scene is framed with two parallel gold lines; the box's sides are decorated with a gold line.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2007.
