Description: Sergey Chistov painted this colorful box. His style is one that can be easily recognized and distinguished from all other Fedoskino painters. He is so popular among collectors that the factory is now instructing artists to reproduce his originals. However, when handling a piece painted by Chistov himself one cannot help but get lost in the fantasy filled style, superb technique, and compositional mastery that he has developed over the years.
The box shows the performance of roaming buffoons known in Russia as "skomorokhi". Skomorokhi play their music loudly, and two bears dance to the accompaniment of their music. The villagers start to leave their houses anticipating with pleasure a joyful entertainment.
The palette is filled with the tones suitable for reproduction of a summer season. Silver paint highlights the sky; gold paint is used to paint jingles on the tambourines and the hats of some characters, and the pipe one of them trumpets.
The scene is framed with a gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed, and dated (2007) by the artist.
