One of the most gifted Fedoskino landscape painters, S. Parmenov, created this large, impressive box. It has four extensive scenes around the body, one rectangular scene on the lid, and four scenes that run around the sloping sides of the lid. All of these scenes are painted to form a single panorama of picturesque Russian winter countryside. Various shades of blue oils suitable for reproduction of the depicted season dominate here. Bright gold paint creates the sparkle of the sunset. Less bright gold paint highlights the ‘snow and water areas' to produce the reflection of the sunset on the snow and on the river. A large piece of mother-of-pearl is set into the rectangular scene on the lid, and shines brilliantly through the birches.
The edges of the lid and the bottom part of the box's body are decorated with two gold parallel lines that also serve as a frame for the depicted scenes.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist.
