This beautiful piece of genuine Russian artistry was composed by the famous Fedoskino artist Yegeniy Solodilov. The box shows the main character of the old Russian fairy-tale “Sadko”. Sadko was one of the richest merchants in the town of Novgorod, and a talented musician. In the foreground we can see Sadko playing his psaltery while in the background his sailing ship is depicted.
The entire scene is painted over a large pearl-shell that shimmers with delicate pink, violet and green undertones. Gold paint is used to highlight Sadko's psaltery, and some of the stones scattered under his legs.
The box's exterior is covered with dark blue lacquer mixed with gold dust. Its interior is covered with the light grey velvety material. The scene is framed with a gold band. Another gold band wraps around the box's sides but it is accompanied by two oval pearl pieces glued to the box manually. The box can be closed firmly by means of a special adjustment that looks like a small gold metal pin that is placed into the socket when the box is closed. The box rests on four small rounded gold metal legs.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2007 and the village of Fedoskino.
