Potekhin of Fedoskino has painted this scene with a winter troika (three horse sleigh) speeding through the Russian countryside. The theme of depicting troikas dates back to the infancy of lacquer art in Russia. Since the beginning lacquer artists have been fascinated with the ideas of freedom and unrestrained exhilaration that comes from a troika ride.
The scene is painted in grey, blue and white oils suitable for reproduction of a winter scene. Gold and silver paints are used to paint the horses' collars and harnesses.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
