Description:

The painting style of Alexander Mikheev is unique and recognizable. In his works he likes to extol beauty of the Russian countryside with its specific architecture that is a part of Russian culture and history. He also is interested in the depiction of religious themes, and this box is one more work from this series.
In this work Mikheev combines the styles of surrealism and realism. He depicts the spirit of a Russian Saint hovering over a small village. The work is called “The Saint/An Old Man”. In Russian language the word ‘an old man' is a synonym to the word "a Saint”, because in the history of Russian Orthodox Church there were many persons who became saint in their old age. ‘An Old Man' is a spiritually pure man who can heal people and even predict forthcoming events.
The scene is painted in green and light grey oils. A large piece of mother-of-pearl that shines with the bright green and pink undertones is set into the sky. Gold paint is used to paint the halo above the head of the old man.
The box's exterior (the edges of the lid and the box's sides) is decorated with intricate ‘scan patterns' composed of tiny triangles and strips hand punched from silver metal sheets, and glued to the box manually.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, the title, Fedoskino and the year of 2007.
