The talented Fedoskino landscape painter Shishkin created this dramatic winter landscape. The artist has caught a thrilling moment when the dullness of a frosty evening is enlivened by the sunset glow.
The scene is based on color contrasts. The elements of the landscape are painted in various shades of dim blue oils to accentuate that the action takes place in winter while the radiance of the sunset, and its reflection on the river have been achieved with the help gold paint. Silver paint that shines through the oils creates brilliance of the snow.
The scene is framed with a gold line; two parallel gold line decorate the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the scene, and rests on four legs. Signed with the name of the artist, Fedoskino, and the year of 2007.
