Description: This square Fedoskino box is a creation of Margarita Pichugina. It shows several scenes from the popular fairy-tale “Little Red Riding Hood”, written by the French writer Charles Perault. Little Red Riding Hood is a little girl who lives in the village near the forest. She wears always wears the red hood and that is the reason of her strange nickname. Once her grandmother gets sick, and Little Red Riding Hood is sent out to bring her cookies. On the way to the grandmother's house she meets the hungry Wolf. The Wolf wants to eat the girl but is afraid to do so in public (there are woodcutters nearby). He approaches the girl, and she tells him where she is going. He suggests the girl pick some flowers, which she does. In the meantime, he goes to the grandmother's house and gains entry by pretending to be the girl. He eats the grandmother and waits for the girl, disguised as the grandmother. When the girl arrives, he eats her too. A woodcutter, however, comes to the rescue and cuts the wolf open. Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother emerge unharmed.
In the center of the composition we can see Little Red Riding Hood who carries cookies to her grandmother while in the far background the artist has painted her grandmother pasturing a goat. From the left of the central scene we can see Little Red Riding Hood who speaks to the Wolf in the forest. From the right of the central scene there are two additional scenes; one of them shows the Wolf who lies in the grandmother's bed and intends to eat the girl while another one features the happy end of this thrilling tale. Blue, dark pink and dark yellow tones of oils dominate here. Mother-of-pearl shines through the dress of Little Red Riding Hood painted in the center, and through the houses drawn in the background. The box's sides are partially covered with red paint. Along the edges of the lid the artist has painted in oils pink berries that form together an original ornament.
The box is constructed out of papier-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge affixed from the top of the composition, and rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2007.
