The famous Fedoskino artist Alexey Chirkov is the creator of this small oval box. This artist is fond of owls, and he has already painted a lot of boxes that depict various species of these enigmatic birds of prey. This is one more work from this series.
Here Chirkov depicts the Eagle Owl sitting on the tree, and its nestlings peeping out of the nest. The scene is painted in brown tones of oils over silver powder and mother-of-pearl inlay. Silver powder shines through the tree the owl is sitting on, and creates brilliance of the moonlit sky. One piece of mother-of-pearl helps to reproduce realistically a glow of the full moon in the night sky whereas another piece of mother-of-pearl that has bright green undertones is set into the background, just below the owl.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Blue lacquer mixed with silver powder covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino, and the title (“The Eagle Owl in the Forest”) on the box's exterior bottom.
