Description: The famous Fedoskino portrait painter Yevgeniy Dokuchaev is the author of this stunning box. It shows a fragment of the famous portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte in Coronation Robes. This masterpiece was originally painted by Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson; it is exhibited in the Bowes Museum, County Durham, UK.
Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (1767-1824), French painter and illustrator. He studied with Jacques-Louis David and won the Prix de Rome in 1789. In style and technique he followed David, but for his choice of themes and his emotional treatment he was acclaimed by the young Romantics. He was particularly interested in unusual color effects and in the problems of concentrated light and shade. Girodet often favored literary themes, but he also won renown for his paintings glorifying Napoleon, and was a fine portraitist.
The portrait is framed with a gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
