This beautiful box continues Alexey Chirkov's series of works dedicated to various species of owls, and shows the Fish Owl sitting on a branch of the old tree, and holding a fish in its claws.
The scene is nicely drawn in brown tones of oils over silver powder and mother-of-pearl inlay. Silver powder is used to paint the background, and to highlight the trees. A large piece of mother-of-pearl that shimmers with green undertones is set into the foreground, just under the owl. The scene is extended on the box's sides where the artist continues to paint the forest landscape; another piece of mother-of-pearl that has green undertones can be found on one of the box's sides.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Blue lacquer mixed with silver powder covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Fedoskino, the year of 2007 and the title (“The Fish Owl”) on the box's exterior bottom.
