This gorgeous box has been painted by the prominent Fedoskino artist Pavel Anokhin.
Pavel was born in 1967 in the town of Dolgoprudniy situated near Moscow. He graduated Fedoskino art school in 1989 and in 1992-1995 he worked in the Fedoskino art school as a teacher. His approach to miniature painting is philosophical and he puts his thoughts behind every work. His goal is to be recognized as one of the top Fedoskino artists of his generation and to have his miniature paintings be around for centuries to come. Nowadays Pavel lives in Moscow suburb with his wife Svetlana (who is also a painter) and 3 children.
Anokhin uses a striking combination of pale, misty oils, gold metallic paints, and delicate, feathery brushstrokes to create this work. Here he depicts the artist who demonstrates his strange, magic picture. This picture looks like a window into medieval Russia. It shows a skomorokh (a vagrant actor in ancient Russia) who gives his breathtaking fire performance to a crowd of people in the street of medieval Moscow. He breathes the fire out his throat, and the flood of fire breaks through the picture, and comes outside the picture.
Gold paint is used to detail the characters' hair, and to create a sparkle of the glass the skomorokh holds in his hands. Gold paint also helps to animate Anokhin's otherworldly palette filled with the pale green, brown and lilac oils. The scene is framed with a wide band painted in light brown oils. The following Cyrillic inscription written in gold wraps around the sides of the box:
“Grimaces, jokes, and leaps entice you with witticism…
But can you be deceived?
The flame of the fire is real.”
A small gold metal knob is attached to the lid's front side to open the box easily. The box rests on four shining gold metal legs that look like small balls.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene. The box is signed with the artist's name.
