Description: This beautiful box has been painted by Dmitriy Osipov from the village of Fedoskino.
It shows the St. Basil's Cathedral that is the gem of ancient Russian architecture. It was built by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1561 to commemorate to the victory over Kazan and Astrakhan Khanate. According to the legend Ivan the Terrible ordered to blind the architects who designed this magnificent building so they could never construct such a masterpiece again. The second name of this magnificent building is “Pokrovsky Cathedral”.
The palette is bright and radiant. Mother-of-pearl shines through the architecture filling the scene with light and splendor. Gold paint is used to detail the cathedral and to paint the clouds. Gold metal leaf is set into the square's pavement (just before the cathedral) to create its brilliance.
The box's sides are decorated with gold leafy patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, the village Fedoskino, and the year of 2007.
