Description: When imagination and skill combine, the results can be an infinite delight. Vladislav Maslov is the type of artist that bubbles over with both. They are his ingredients. His simple recipe for success. This piece exemplifies the idea of the hidden treasure. It does so with its abundant detail, sparkling mother-of-pearl inlays and the ferocious beauty of the color combinations. This is a singular look into the world of Fedoskino lacquer miniatures.
The box shows the forest witch, Baba-Yaga, making a magic potion out of forest herbs. Baba-Yaga's servants, the White Steed, the Black Cat and the White Cat, observe this interesting procedure. Since ancient times the white and black colors in Russia are associated with a phenomenon of the other world.
The scene is brilliantly painted in Maslov's signature style. Some of the details like the big bowl painted in the center of the scene, are enhanced with shining silver paint while the other ones like the twigs of a rowan tree scattered on the floor, are strengthened with gold paint. The bur flowers that frame the scene are crafted three-dimensionally; their leaves are painted over sparkling mother-of-pearl inlays that have bright blue and green undertones. A large piece of mother-of-pearl that also has green and blue undertones is set into the middle of the bowl to create the illusion that a magic beverage is boiling inside the bowl. The bowl is also decorated with three-dimensional elements to give it a three-dimensional look.
The scene is framed with a gold line; the box's bottom part is also outlined with gold. Some of the box's sides are of blue-turquoise tone, while the others are covered with deep blue lacquer. On the box's front side Maslov continues to paint the bur leaves using silver paint while the other sides are covered with silver-blue veins to imitate a stone color. The box's exterior bottom is covered with black lacquer, and its interior is covered with red lacquer.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("Baba-Yaga"), and the year of 2008.
