Description:

This originally shaped box has been painted by Pavel Govorun. This talented Fedoskino artist has his own peculiar painting style. His special skills include his use of gold metal leaf and mother-of-pearl inlay. He also likes to use silver punch-outs (or 'silver scan patterns') in place of filigree and for decoration on the exterior of his boxes.
The box's lid shows a fragment from the ancient Russian legend "Sadko". Here we can see the prosperous merchant Sadko who says goodbye to his wife, Lyubava, before leaving his native kingdom for foreign countries where he is going to sail.
Light blue and grey tones of oils dominate here. Gold paint is used to detail the costumes of the characters, the architecture, the boat and the leaves of the tree painted in the bottom left corner. A large piece of mother-of-pearl shines through the rippled water of the river. The scene painted on the lid is extended on the box's sides where the artist continues to draw the sceneries of the ancient Russian kingdom. The medieval castle and the crown of the tree that can be found here are painted over the bulges on the box's exterior, and this helps to give them a three-dimensional look. The box's sides are also decorated with a complex pattern composed of silver punch-outs (silver scan pattern).
The box's exterior is of beautiful turquoise-blue tone, and covered with light blue veins and blurry spots to imitate a stone color. The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box sits flat. On the box's exterior bottom Govorun has written his name, Fedoskino, the year of 2008, and his personal insignia.
