Description: This unique piece of Russian lacquer artistry was created by the talented Vladimir Rogatov of Fedoskino. Known for museum quality compositions, singular in their structure and design, Rogatov displays the ability to take us on a different adventure with each coming work. Creative originals that are as memorable as they are aesthetically appealing.
The box shows a group of small domestic churches that are situated within the territory of the Moscow Kremlin. These churches were built in the period from the 14th to the 17th.
The palette is filled with various shades of grey oils. The entire box is painted with white lacquer, which is hard to work with because it magnifies any flaws an artist might make. The sides are decorated with symmetrical tartan patterns, with white, gold and grey paint, that bring a high sense of formality to the box. Gold is also used to create a thin frame around the scene painted on the lid. The space on the sides that is free from tartan patterns is covered with light grey blurry spots to imitate a stone color. The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four rounded metal legs.
