Description: This gorgeous piece of Russian lacquer artistry was created by the talented Victor Tretyakov of Fedoskino. Here the artist has drawn the picturesque view of the Novodevichy Convent that was founded in 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili III in commemoration of the conquest of Smolensk in 1514. In the foreground we can see the Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk while in the background the Bell-Tower is depicted.
Tretyakov's palette accurately shows the architecture with the deep blues in the cupolas and the reddish pink in the belfry. The addition of a winter setting adds to the serene ambiance that dominates this painting.
The scene is framed with a gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
