Description: This heavenly example of authentic Russian artistry was composed by the talented Olga Kachalkina from the village of Fedoskino. The work is called “The Beauty of Nature”, and each of the box's five sides shows a scene drawn on this theme. On the box's lid the artist has painted the mother-bird feeding its nestling; the front side shows the bird hovering over its nest with some eggs inside; the right side depicts the butterfly eating sugary nectar from a flower blossom; on the left side Kachalkina has drawn a bee hovering over flowers of an apple tree; and on the rear side we can see a dragonfly sitting on a blade of grass.
Each of the scenes is painted in light green oils with addition of light brown,
light blues and pinks. Shimmering silver metal paint is used to enhance the
colors throughout the scenes and fill them with light and sparkle.
Each of the scenes is framed with a gold line accompanied by gold dots. The box's exterior imitates a stone color (dark blue blurry spots and veins are scattered against the black lacquered surface). On the box's exterior bottom Kachalkina has written her name, the title of the work, and the year of 2008. Here she has also drawn a dandelion using oil paint, and framed this scene with a gold line.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged, and the box rests flat.
