This exquisite piece was composed by talented Fedoskino artist Marina Rogatova. Her color treatment is of masterful design. Her audiences have been consistently inspired and intrigued by the artist's work, both in person and in the many lacquer art books her work is featured in.
The box shows a bee collecting a sugary nectar on the flowered meadow. Rogatova has already created a series of works painted on this theme. The scene is painted in bright oils over silver metal powder that beautifully shines through the oils. Gold paint is used to draw the bee and some of the plants. Pieces of mother-of-pearl that shine with blue and green undertones are set into the big flowers painted in the middle of the scene.
The edges of the lid are outlined with gold. The box's sides are decorated with an intricate gold floral pattern accompanied by a simple gold design that wraps around the bottom part of the box's exterior.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is painted with a creamy white lacquer while the interior is painted with a deep red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the year of 2008.
