Ivan Makarov was born in 1822 in Arzamas, and died in 1897 in Petersburg. His father, Kuzma Alexandrovich Makarov, was also a painter. Under the guidance of his father, Ivan Makarov advanced in painting. In 1845 he entered the Art Academy. His teacher was the famous painter, Alexey Markov. In 1853 he went abroad, and spent much time in Rome. During that period he specialized in painting women's and children's portraits. Ivan Makarov also painted icons, and that is why he was invited to take part in painting the walls of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral.
