Natalya Lavrenkova is the author of this interesting work. Here she has chosen to depict a scene from the well-known English fairy-tale “Tom Thumb”. This tale tells about the little boy who is as small as his mother's thumb. The tale begins with a farmer and his wife who are desperate for a child. A magician hears their plea and, by magic, Tom Thumb appears. The world is a dangerous place for little Tom Thumb and the tale focuses on some of his many adventures. He falls into his mother's pie mix, narrowly avoids being eaten, gets picked up by a bird and dropped into a lake, and is finally swallowed by a fish, only to turn up back in his mother's kitchen. He then is kidnapped but escapes by telling the horse to go to the police station with the two robbers. Finally he goes back home to live happily ever after. The box shows the moment when Tom speaks to his mother while standing on her palm.
The scene is framed with a gold line; two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the title.
