Description:

This extremely life like 19th-century style portrait of a gypsy woman with flowers is masterly executed by a well-established Fedoskino artist Tatyana Frolova.
The colors are very direct and carry with them a high degree of realism. The color variations in the bouquet look as if the flowers were transplanted from a garden directly onto this box. The woman's face is painted to be very expressive and her demeanor is quite calm. The expert detail can be seen in the flower arrangement as well as in her clothing. Aluminum powder has been used as an underlayer for the oils to fill the background with light and to accentuate richness of the woman's dress and her kerchief. Gold paint is used to detail the woman's kerchief and her earrings. A piece of mother-of-pearl shines through the woman's kerchief and her dress.
The portrait is framed with two parallel gold lines; two parallel gold lines can be also found wrapping around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the portrait, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2008.
