Description: This interestingly designed semicircular box is a creation of the famous
Fedoskino artist Konstantin Danshin. It shows several realistically painted cats enjoying a sunny winter day from a wooden terrace of a peasant house. The
semicircular shape of the box suits perfectly for depiction of the terrace and
the beautiful winter landscape seen from outside of the terrace.
The terrace and each of the cats are painted in various shades of brown oils
whereas the background winter landscape is drawn in blue and white oils.
Silver powder has been used as an underlayer for the sky. Silver powder also
shines through some of the architectural structures drawn in the background,
and through the floor of the wooden terrace.
The box has wonderful decoration on the top of the lid and on the bottom part of the box's sides, done with gold paint and accented with blue oils. The bottom part of the box's sides is also decorated with three gold metal threads that run parallel to each other. The box's exterior bottom imitates red marble (brown-pinkish blurry spots are scattered against the black lacquered
background). The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer. The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged and the box sits flat. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
