Description:

This beautiful piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Mikhail Papenov of Fedoskino. It shows a picturesque view the ancient Russian town of Rostov the Great in winter. Rostov the Great is an important tourist centre of the so called Golden ring. It is located on the shores of Lake Nero in Yaroslavl Oblast. While the official name of the town is Rostov, it is better known to the Russians as Rostov Veliky (or Rostov the Great). This name is used to distinguish it from Rostov on Don, which is now a much larger city.
The scene is framed with a simple gold pattern composed of parallel gold lines. The box's sides are decorated with symmetrical tartan patterns painted in blue and light brown oils and outlined with gold.
The palette is based on very light colors that show the bright winter light that is cast onto the white landscape and the stone structures. The artist uses a delicate combination of colors in the blue sky that is full of cotton-like clouds. The shadows detailing the snow give this area of the piece a photo-like quality. The horse is depicted to be moving at a very moderate pace and look natural in doing so. The architecture is executed with absolutely exquisite craftsmanship. A shining piece of mother-of-pearl is set into the cathedral that is painted in the background.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer mixed with gold dust covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, the year of 2008 and the title on the lid's interior.
