This attractive piece was created by Fedoskino master Ye. Potekhin. Fine technique and masterful detail compliment each other on this piece of quality Russian artistry. Potekhin has created many vivid compositions of everyday life which consistently represent the various sides of human nature and the events which shape it.
Here the artist depicts a drunken merchant returning home from the tavern. He sits in the sledge pulling by a troika of horses, and sings a song to a coachman.
The elegantly shaped box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The scene is framed with a gold line while the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name.
