Description: Renowned Fedoskino painter Bebikhov has crafted this exquisite portrait of a young Girl in traditional Russian attire.
This portrait is a version of the famous painting “Boyarinya bearing a tray” painted by Konstantin Makovskiy. Works dedicated to a peasant way of life were very popular in 19th century in Russia. The world-famous Russian painters Tropinin, Argunov, Alexeev and many others created their masterpieces on this theme.
This Girl is wearing a kokoshnik, or traditional Russian headdress. These kokoshniks were very ornamental, and originally were worn only by married women. The girl is also wearing a traditional white shirt underneath her sarafan, which is the sleeveless dress. Both practical and decorative, the traditional costume is very unique to Russian culture, and many fine examples of kokoshniks and sarafans are displayed in museums throughout Russia. The girl also wears the luxurious necklace designed in the eastern style and decorated with precious stones. The necklace, the kokoshnik and the pendant earrings depicted here are typical jewels for Russia of 15th-16th centuries.
The portrait is framed with a gold line; two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene, and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist name, name of the work (Jar of Honey) and Fedoskino.
