This beautiful box has been painted by Taisia Danchenko from the village of Fedoskino. Here she has drawn a recognizable moment from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland". Alice asks her questions to the Caterpillar who smokes the hookah sitting on the big mushroom.
The scene is painted in bright oils over silver metal powder that accentuates colors and creates depth of the composition. Gold metal leaf shines through the mushroom, the big stones painted from the left of the mushroom, and through the cushion the Caterpillar is leaning his elbows on.
The box's exterior imitates a stone color (light blue and green blurry spots and veins are scattered against the cream background). The interior is traditionally covered with dark red lacquer.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the title.
