Description: This box has been painted by Natalya Gogina from the village of Fedoskino. It shows the famous St. Basil's Cathedral located on the Red Square. This cathedral has the second name - the Pokrovsky Cathedral that has been chosen as the title for the work. This gem of ancient Russian architecture was built by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1561 to commemorate to the victory over Kazan and Astrakhan Khanate.
A simply elegant skan design wraps around the sides of the box. Skan are individual gold punchouts that are applied to the box during the drying process of the lacquer.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, the title ("Pokrovsky Cathedral" 1555-1561) and the year of 2005 on the box's exterior bottom.
