Maslov's artistic ability is easy to recognize because of its impressive details that invite the audience into the scene. There is powerful expression on the faces of his characters and the settings are a delightful display of artistic imagery. Each character becomes an individual sculpture. Maslov takes the mood of the moment and transfers it into the image desired. This multi-dimensional piece is an excellent example of Maslov's diverse brushwork.
Here the artist has painted the allegory of Night as he imagines it. In the center of the composition he has depicted a beautiful girl who symbolize the Night and all around her various nocturnal birds and insects are painted. A large round-shaped piece of mother-of-pearl is set behind the Night. Some of the details like the full moon and the Night's costume are enhanced with shining gold paint and gold powder. Sparkling pearl beads are glued on the box's lid and sides to decorate it's exterior. On the box's sides Maslov continues to paint beautiful flowers. A wide band composed of crushed mother-of-pearl that shines brightly with green, pink and violet undertones wrap around the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The box's exterior bottom, and the interior of the box are covered with cream lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior a square piece of mother-of-pearl is glued on which the artist has painted his name and the title ("Night") for the work.
