Description: This magnificent, richly decorated box is a wonderful creation of the famous Fedoskino artist Vladislav Maslov. Vladislav's artistic ability is easy to recognize because of its impressive details that invite the audience into the scene.
The box's lid shows the forest witch, Baba-Yaga, riding her mortar and holding a little boy in her hands whom she has kidnapped. Since old times in Russia parents have been threatening their naughty children with Baba-Yaga who likes to eat little mischievous boys and girls. The scene is extended on the box's sides where the artist continues to paint Baba-Yaga's hut and the beautiful forest landscape.
The scene is drawn in dark tones as the action takes place at night. Inlays of mother-of-pearl are used to enhance the beauty of the color palette. One piece of mother-of-pear is set into Baba-Yaga's hut while another one shines through the sleeve of Baba-Yaga's shirt. Maslov also uses gold paint, gold and aluminum powders to add a subtle glow to the scene and to fill it with light.
The bottom part of the box's sides is decorated with red-silver bands. The box's exterior bottom is covered with gold powder mixed with crimson oil paint while the interior is covered with gold powder mixed with green oil paint. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on four legs. On the lid's interior a square shaped piece of mother-of-pearl is glued; the title of the work, the artist's name and the year of 2008 is written on it.
