Description: This large oval box is painted on the theme of Ukranian peasant life that was extremely popular in the nineteenth century after the smashing success of Gogol's “Ukrainian Tales”.
The artist who created this piece, Galina Dubovikova graduated the Fedoskino Art School in 1956. She studied under A.A. Parfionov, A.I. Kuznetsov, and D.N. Didunik and was influenced by such well-known Russian artists as Tropinin, Bryullov, Borovikovskiy, Kiprenskiy, and Livitskiy. She is well known for depicting splendid woman portraits. The artist uses a wide spectrum of colors in her paintings that is why all her works are expressive and at the same time realistic.
In this piece, Dubovikova has used oil paints to create the adaptation of 19th century canvas and oil portrait entitled "Ukrainian Girl" that was painted by Konstantin Makovsky.
The portrait is framed with a very thin gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
