Description:

This brilliantly painted box continues Yuriy Aldoshkin's series of works dedicated to Russian cathedrals and monasteries. Here we can see the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood that is one of the main sights of St. Petersburg. Its official name is the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. The name refers to the blood of the assassinated Alexander II of Russia, who was mortally wounded on that site on March 13, 1881. Construction began in 1883 under Alexander III, as a memorial to his father, Alexander II. Work progressed slowly and was finally completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907. Funding was provided by the Imperial family with the support of many private donors.
The scene is painted with photo-quality precision using light blue and grey oils. Gold paint is used to highlight the architecture of the cathedral, and to provide the piece with luster and brilliance.
The scene is framed with gold band; another gold band wraps around the box's sides. The box's sides are decorated with an elegant pattern composed of gold beads.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene and the box sits flat. The work is signed with the name of the artist, Fedoskino, the year of 2008 and title (“Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ”).
