Description:

Created by one of the true Fedoskino masters, Maria Wagner, this beautiful lacquer box shows a scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale “Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf”. The tale tells about the adventures of Prince Ivan Tsarevich and his friend, the Grey Wolf. The Wolf was magician, and helped Ivan to fulfill the tsar's orders: to get the firebird, to get the horse with the golden mane, and to get the beautiful princess. The scene painted on the box's lid shows a final moment of the story: Ivan is the owner of all three wonders - the firebird, the horse with the golden mane, and the beautiful princess Elena. On the box's exterior bottom Wagner has painted the Fire Bird.
This palette is one commonly used by Wagner; reds and blues that are vivid and bright create the focal points in the scene. Her style is one that is unique to Fedoskino, and can easily be distinguished from other artists' styles. This scene is no exception as she is at the top of her game in her linear structure and brushwork. By layering her composition she creates a life-like depth. Silver metal powder has been used as an underlayer for the scene. This adds to the already radiant color palette, which enhances the vivacity and life in the scene.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior of the box imitates a stone color (silver veins are scattered against the black lacquered background) to add a fitting aesthetic to the wonderful composition on the lid. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
