This majestic box is a creation of Alexander Kononov. Alexander was born in 1956 in the village of Ivashevo, in the Dmitrevo Region. He studied at the Fedoskino Art School from 1971-1975.
On the box's lid and around the box's sides Kononov has painted picturesque marine scenes. The brilliant canvas-on-oil paintings by Ivan Aivazovsky inspired the artist to create this work. For instance, on the box's front side we can see Kononov's adaptation of Aivazovsky's masterpiece “The Sunset Near the Banks of Crimea” (1856, the State Russian Museum, St.-Petersburg) and the left side depicts Aivazovsky's “The Sea at Moonlit Night” (1858, the National Gallery of Armenia).
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold designs. The lid is hinged. The work is signed with the name of the artist, Fedoskino, and the year of 2008.
