Sergey Kirsanov from the village of Fedoskino is known as a talented landscape painter. Being enchanted with the beauty of modest Russian nature, he created a series of works painted on this theme. These creations are penetrated the feeling of deep love to his native land with its ramshackle peasant houses, small wooden churches, boundless expanses of snow covered fields and evergreen forests.
This rectangular box shows an old church situated on the bank of lake on the edge of the forest. Grey and green tones are used here to reproduce the atmosphere of a summer evening. Mother-of-pearl is set into the sky to create a golden glow of the sunset, as well as another piece of mother-of-pearl is shining throught the water of a lake.
The scene is framed with so called "scan patterns" composed of tiny shapes hand punched from gold metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand to the box, as well as this pattern also decorates the sides of a base.
The box's exterior is covered with light green lacquer; its interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.The box is constructed of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name.
