Description: This is one more gorgeous creation of the innovative Fedoskino artist Eduard Makarov. Known for his rich, jewel like colors, shimmering atop gold metal leaf and mother-of-pearl inlays, he creates exquisite and totally unique Russian lacquer boxes.
In this work Makarov has expressed his impressions from Lewis Carroll's classic tale “Alice in Wonderland”.
Like in most of his works, here the artist has created a multi-layered composition. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By having mother-of-pearl, silver and gold paints and powders below several layers of clear lacquer, then painting over it, Makarov gives the box depth and shine impossible to achieve with oil paints alone. The metallic and iridescent palette, which has become a signature trait of Makarov's lacquer art, gives a feeling of magic and splendor.
The edges of the lid are decorated with silver scan patterns composed of tiny shapes: beads, rhombs, triangles, stars, hand punched from silver metal sheets, and glued to the box manually. The artist has used a multi-layered method of applying paint over the whole surface of the box's exterior. The box's interior is red, but the interior bottom is adorned with gold metal powder spread around two pearl beads glued to the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on legs. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has written his name, Fedoskino, Russia, the year of 2007 and the title (“Alice in Wonderland” L. Carrol 1832-1898).
