Description:

Sergey Chistov of Fedoskino painted this wonderful piece. His style is one that can be easily recognized and distinguished from all other Fedoskino painters. He is so popular among collectors that the factory is now instructing artists to reproduce his originals. However, when handling a piece painted by Chistov himself one cannot help but get lost in the fantasy filled style, superb technique, and compositional mastery that he has developed over the years.
The artist depicts a magical scene from the story entitled, "The Princess Frog." The Frog Princess emerges from the crowd on a carpet of water with swans gliding smoothly across its surface. In the waning moments of this hypnotic dance Ivan will go to his wife's chamber and burn her frog skin, which she could only get out of for a short while. However, this was a bad choice on his part because as soon as the skin burned all the way the Princess, his wife, was taken away on magical winds into the custody of the evil Tsar Koschei. What would a fairy tale be without a flurry of conflict and a hero in need?
The palette Chistov uses incorporates greens, reds, browns and blues, all of which are primary colors, and ones that help to create the movement in the scene. The compositional movement is also aided in large part by the linear structure and positioning of the characters within the parameters of the painting. Aluminum powder is used as an interior light within the costumes of the characters. It can also be found in the water. Gold paint as well as gold metal leaf inlays help to decorate the costumes of the characters. Mother-of-pearl inlays shine through the costume of the Princess Frog and through the costumes of the girls standing from the left and right from her.
The outer edge of the lid is painted with a fine band of gold paint. The base of the box has two lines done in gold painted parallel to each other, the bottom line slightly thicker than the other.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2008.
