Description: Maria Wagner is the artist responsible for this sentimental scene. The rich and respectable gentleman pays money to the bird seller, and his young, beautiful wife sets some of the birds free.
The palette is one commonly used by Wagner; reds and blues that are vivid and bright create the focal points in the scene. Wagner's style is one that is unique to Fedoskino, and can easily be distinguished from other artists' styles. Aluminum powder combined with the oil paints gives a luminescent quality to the clothing, the city landscape and to the sky in the background. This is a striking composition from all angles.
The box's exterior imitates a stone color (silver dots and veins are scattered against the black lacquered surface). The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer. In addition, on the box's exterior bottom the artist has drawn a nice flower using oil paints.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
