Description: The well known Fedoskino artist Maria Vagner did this beautiful work that shows the final moment of the popular Russian fairy-tale “Flying Ship”. The plot of this tale is truly interesting. One of three brothers embarks on a journey aboard a flying ship, during which he takes on as passengers, six men with special powers. With the help of each man's different talent, he is able to perform impossible tasks set for him by the Tsar and marry the Tsar's daughter.
The color palette consists of a wide spectrum of bright and highly visible colors that radiate off of the box. Crushed mother-of-pearl, aluminum powder, and gold paint are all mixed separately into the oils so that the areas painted with them glow. This use of these secondary mediums is done very subtly, although it is found all throughout the scene, and creates an internal light source within the painting.
The scene is framed with a gold line. The edges of the lid are adorned with intricate gold leafy ornaments. The gold floral and leafy ornaments completed with silver flowers painted in the middle of each of the box's sides can be found wrapping around the box's base.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on eight feet. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
