Description: This attractive piece of Russian lacquer artistry was created by the talented Marina Khasanova of Fedoskino. Multiple layers of precise skill and applied imagination go into the creation of such an elegant piece of art.
The work is brilliantly painted in the style of fantasy, and shows the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon (or Neptune in Roman mythology). Poseidon was a son of Cronus and Rhea. In most accounts he is swallowed by Cronus at birth but later saved, with his other brothers and sisters, by Zeus.
Here we can see a beautiful moment when Poseidon trumpets his seashell. The aquatic atmosphere in this scene is reproduced by blue and green tones. Some seashells that decorate Poseidon's hair are drawn in brilliant gold pain. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has painted one more scene that depicts several fish swimming through the water-plants. The box has the shape of a seashell that suits perfectly to a chosen theme.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist's name, the title (“Poseidon”), the year of 2008 and the village of Fedoskino.
