Description: This small oval box is a creation of Tamara Volodina. It shows a final scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale “The Humpbacked Pony”. This thrilling tale tells about the adventures of the tsar's servant, Ivan, and his faithful friend, the Humpbacked Pony. Here we can see Ivan presenting a ring to the Tsar Maiden. The Huge Whale helped Ivan to get this ring. It was lost somewhere on the bottom of the ocean and the Tsar Maiden's errand was to get this ring.
The scene is painted in various shades of green oils. One piece of mother-of-pearl shines brightly through the Tsar Maiden's costume with pink, green, and yellow undertones. Another one piece of mother-of-pearl shines through the sleeve of Ivan's costume. Gold paint is used richly to decorate the old Tsar's costume and in less amounts the costumes of Ivan, the Tsar Maiden and the boyar standing behind the old Tsar.
The box's sides are decorated with a beautiful pattern that imitates a stone color (green and silver veins are scattered against the light green background). Light green tone of oils is also used to cover the box's exterior bottom while the interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the name of the artist, Fedoskino, and the title (“The Tsar Maiden”).
