Description:

The famous oil painting on canvas “The Union of Earth and Water” inspired Artist Yuliya Botova to create this box. Painted in 1618 by Rubens this priceless masterpiece is exhibited in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
The Flemish and European Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens was the most renowned northern European artist of his day, and is now widely recognized as one of the foremost painters in Western art history. He was the proponent of the Baroque style which emphasized movement, color, and sensuality. By completing the fusion of the realistic tradition of Flemish painting with the imaginative freedom and classical themes of Italian Renaissance painting, he fundamentally revitalized and redirected northern European painting.
This box is a fine example of how Russian lacquer miniature artists are able to bring hand-painted masterpieces into regular people's homes.
The scene is framed with a gold line; the box's sides are decorated with two parallel gold lines.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed, and dated (2007) by the artist.
