Description:

This gem of Fedoskino lacquer miniature art was created by Vladislav Maslov. The originally shaped and richly decorated box shows a scene from Lewis Carroll's (1832-1898) classic tale "Through the Looking Glass". Here the artist has chosen to depict Alice's encounter with the Lion and the Unicorn. In this tale the Lion and the Unicorn acted out the following nursery rhyme (this rhyme is written on the white ribbon that wraps around the box's sides):

“The Lion and the Unicorn were fighting for the crown:
The Lion beat the Unicorn all round the town.
Some gave them white bread, some gave them brown;
Some gave them plum-cake and drummed them out of town.”

In the composition Maslov has painted the Lion and the Unicorn who finished to fight for the king's crown, and Alice who is going to cut the plum-cake. The artist continues to paint the interior of the chamber where the action takes place on the box's sides.
The work is painted in Maslov's recognizable style. The composition is filled with an innumerable number of masterfully painted details. Silver and gold powder shine through the oils accentuating richness of the characters' costumes and some other minor details. Gold paint is used to create a sparkle of minute details. Pieces of mother-of-pearl are set into two apples depicted from the right and left of Alice, and also through the crescent hanging over the Lion's head.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the box's exterior bottom and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2009 and the title.
