With imagination and skill combined, the talented artist Sergey Knyazev has created this stunning box that exemplifies the idea of the hidden treasure. It does so with abundant detail and the ferocious beauty of the color combinations and mother-of-pearl inlay.
The box shows an episode from the fairy-tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". Here we can see Ivan Tsarevich and Princess Elena sit on a Grey Wolf while he is jumping over the towns and the villages. Mother-of-pearl shines through the Princess's dress, the sky and the moon that is crafted three-dimensionally. Gold metal leaf creates brilliance of the firebird, the cage, some of the cupolas of the depicted churches and ornaments on the characters' clothes. The scene is painted in blue oils mixed with aluminum powder. Blue and grey oils mixed with aluminum powder also cover the box's exterior. For additional decoration the blue-silver surface of the box's exterior is studded with gold blurry spots. On each of the box's sides the artist has painted a swallow.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The interior of the work is covered with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf", Fedoskino and the year of 2008 on the lid's interior.
