Description:

The talented Fedoskino artist, Sergey Knyazev, is the author of this amazing box. Here he has painted the beautiful woman sitting on the chair in the garden and admiring the rose. She is dressed in the rich attire that reflects the fashion of the nineteenth century, and looks like an aristocrat woman who has left St.-Petersburg and high life to rest in her family estate and enjoy wild nature of Russian countryside.
The entire scene is painted on the big piece of mother-of-pearl that creates the three-dimensional arch above the woman's head, enriches the woman's costume and produces a sparkle of the sky. Gold paint is used to adorn the woman's costume with intricate patterns and minute details. To paint this scene the artist has used the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture. The scene is framed with Knyazev's signature pattern composed of several interlaced golden lines. The box's exterior is covered with blue paint mixed with silver powder; for additional decoration the silver-blue exterior is studded with small flowers painted in oils and bright blue spangles. The box's interior is covered with red lacquer mixed with gold dust.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat base. The work is signed, dated (2009) and titled (“Girl with a Rose”) by the artist in gold paints on the lid's interior.
