Description: This majestic gala portrait of Catherine the Great has been painted by the famous Fedoskino portrait painter, Svetlana Danshina. Catherine the Great was the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, and is well known for carrying out the policy of Westernization in Russia started by Peter the Great. She is considered to be one the brightest, talented and extraordinary personalities in the history of Russia. Being German by birth she managed to became the Empress of Russian and gain respect and sincere love of Russian people.
The portrait painted on this box is a fragment of the famous full-length portrait of Catherine the Great holding the scepter. This masterpiece was painted by the unknown painter in the second part of the eighteenth century. You can see this portrait in the exposition of the State Saratov Art Museum named after Radishchev.
The portrait is framed with a thin gold line. The same two gold lines encompass the box's sides. A wide gold band can be found wrapping around the base of the box. The box's exterior imitates a stone color (silver greenish veins and blurry spots are scattered against the black lacquered surface of the box's exterior).
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
