Description:

One of the leading Fedoskino painters, Pavel Anokhin, has painted this charming small box that shows two romantic ladies of the nineteenth century. The depicted ladies remind the ladies painted in the famous painting “Pool” painted in 1902 by the outstanding Russian painter Borisov-Musatov.
Anokhin's otherworldly style and subtle palette are easily recognizable. The palette includes very soft grey, blue and brown tones. Gold metal powder shines through the hairs of the ladies. Brilliant silver paint is used to paint the wings of the dragonfly sitting on the palm of one of the ladies. The composition is framed with a wide gold band; on this gold band the artist has written the following words: "A blue dragonfly has singed all summer long..." (it is a line from the fable written by the Russian fabulist, Ivan Krylov)
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition, and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
