Description:

This beautiful box is a creation of a Top Fedoskino artist Sergey Kozlov. This prominent Fedoskino artist was born in 1955 in the ancient town of Dmitrov, not far from Moscow. He graduated from the Fedoskino Art School in 1974. His teachers were G. Larishev, S. Monashov and P. Davydov. Kozlov is a member of the USSR Union of Artists since 1983. His works are exhibited in many Russian museums. The artist frequently participates in international art exhibitions and has many prizes including the National Prize of Russia.
Sergey Kozlov has his individual style of painting. He is a Master of exquisite and refined painting technique. He combines reflective lacquer surfaces, oils and "through-painting" with translucent paints, preferring to use a cold blue and gray palette in his compositions. By applying an undercoat of gold and mother-of-pearl, he achieves striking color effects and gives his painted scenes a rich glow. His works are in very high demand among collectors in Russia, Europe and the USA.
On this box we can see a major wooden monument of Kizhi Island-the Cathedral of the Transfiguration (1714).The island of Kizhi is located in Lake Onega, in the republic of Karelia, northwestern part of Russia. Kizhi is home to a "living museum" of wooden architectural monuments, comprising both houses and places of worship, which has been designated a UNESCO site of special cultural interest.
Extensive building on Kizhi began in the 16th century, when the island was made the administrative centre for all the villages in the surrounding region. In particular, several churches and other ecclesiastical buildings were erected, all made entirely of wood. Among those which have been preserved are the Cathedral of the Transfiguration (1714), with 22 cupolas (domes) and a four-tier iconostasis (screen with doors and icons), the Church of the Protection of the Virgin (1764), which has nine cupolas and a hipped-roof bell-tower built in 1874. Since Kizhi was designated a museum in 1960, a number of other wooden buildings (dating mainly from the 17th to 19th centuries), including several peasant houses, have been brought from elsewhere in the area.
The beauty of Russian countryside is expressed on this box with a great skill and an emotional excitement. Large and brilliant piece of mother-of-pearl shines through the cathedral's cupolas painted in the foreground creating an illusion of moving skies. Silver paint is used to highlight the architecture's details.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. The scene is framed with a silver line which goes to an intereting ornament. On the box sides the artist has painted same style ornament using silver paint. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2009.
