This stylish box is a creation Ye. Nechaeva. It shows the main characters of the popular Russian folk fairy-tale "By the Pike's Will" or "Emelya and the Magic Pike". In short, this tale is about a young man, Emelya, who finds a special fish that promises to fulfill all his wishes. Here we can see the Magic Pike, the general of the Tsar's army, the Tsar and Yemelya riding the stove together with the Princess.
The scene is painted in a unique style using only two tones: white and blue to imitate the world-famous Gzel porcelain. The costumes of the characters and the stars in the sky are detailed with brilliant gold paint.
The box is richly decorated. The composition painted on the box's lid is decorated with silver scan patterns (made of tiny shapes hand punched from gold metal sheets, and then glued to the box manually). Gold and silver scan patterns can be also painted on the box's exterior bottom and on its sides. The design of these gold and silver scan patterns is very complex and beautiful. Some of them resemble shining stars while another ones look like snowflakes.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the title of the tale.
